At the end of the brief but strongly dramatic interlude in the trial for Nick's death, the indictment and Thomas' threats, Nikki meets Paul and between the two there is immediately the passion of the past. However, Nikki soon regrets and confirms her choice to stay with Greg, who has always been sweet and understanding with her. On the other hand, Paul relegates the meeting with Nikki to a simple escapade as he is busy dating April. Soon, however, the meeting with Nikki leaves its mark when Paul begins to feel strange pains. He is hospitalized, soon he is diagnosed with a dangerous venereal disease and only a few days later, talking with Nikki, he realizes that he has contracted it from their intercourse, being obviously Nikki a healthy carrier and having probably contracted it herself from the vagabond Joseph. Anita Davis, a nurse friend of April's, reassures in any case a worried April that the disease is neither lethal nor serious; reassurances that for April and Paul also come from the doctors to whom the man addresses himself, according to whom in a few weeks the disease will disappear without consequences. But when, a week later, a very happy April announces to Paul that she is pregnant, the frightened man returns to the hospital to find out more about the disease and discovers with great terror that it can be fatal for pregnant women and the children they are carrying. Paul, in any case, decides not to tell April anything and, rather than being close to her, slowly ends up leaving the woman, frightened by the consequences of their relationship and the responsibilities that begin to fall on him.
