In spite of Nikki's best intentions to start her life over by putting this long period of pain and alcohol behind her, she is unable to find happiness or the strength to stop drinking. This whole situation is caused by the painkillers that the woman has been forced to take for some time now and on which she is highly dependent; painkillers necessary to alleviate the strong back pains that the woman feels. Victor, knowing all too well the frailties of his ex-wife and not accepting the fact that she is destroying herself in this way, is convinced that the woman cannot continue in her present condition for long. The man, thus, insists that she go to a surgeon and undergo back surgery, so as to solve her problems at the root. Although Jack is also convinced that the operation is the only remedy to finally begin the rehabilitation phase and his escape from the tunnel of alcohol and drug addiction, Nikki categorically refuses to undertake the operation, fearing the risks it may entail. Victor then threatens Nikki that, should she refuse to have the operation, he will take custody of little Nicholas, as she is unable to care for the child. Desperate at the prospect of losing her son, Nikki reacts in the only way she has to relieve her pain and depression: by taking pills and drinking. Shortly afterwards, in an absolutely precarious condition both physically and emotionally, the woman faints during a walk and is found only a few hours later by Nicholas himself, intent on playing in the snow. Jack immediately takes Nikki to the hospital, and she is in danger of frostbite. Victor arrives at Nikki's bedside and accuses Jack of neglecting his wife in such a delicate moment, while the man counters by placing the responsibility for what happened entirely on Victor, who with his threat to take Nicholas' custody away from Nikki has done nothing but worsen the situation. The uproar between the two breaks out and only the awakening of Nikki, who is out of danger, is able to stop it, before the two can end up at each other's throats.
