1990 (#25) - Drucilla's shoplifting at Fenmore and Nathan's case

In spite of Mamie's and Drucilla's promises, the girl, with her rebellious, free-spirited character and the amount of time she spends on the streets living hand-to-mouth, just can't stay out of trouble. After meeting and falling in love with an unsavory boy, Juice Kandle, Drucilla is caught by Nathan Hastings, Paul's private detective friend, shoplifting at the Fenmore store; Nathan, who works in security there, immediately alerts Lauren to the attempted theft. Arrested and brought before Judge Roberto Hernandez, this does not go unnoticed by John, who becomes furious with Mamie and informs her that his niece no longer lives in their villa. Mamie cannot blame the man who has been employing her for so many years; rather, she blames Drucilla for once again letting down the trust of those around them. Desperate and repentant of the gesture, however, the girl makes a breach in Nathan's heart who, sorry for having driven the girl into this situation, asks to be allowed to have custody of the girl. And so, despite the fact that the judge can't help but notice the girl's long list of minor criminal records, putting his hand on his heart he decides to grant the girl freedom and release her into the custody of the man. Drucilla is overjoyed by the second chance and promises the judge and Nathan that this time she will not let anyone down. Drucilla confesses to Nathan that she has a dream of becoming a dancer and that she has decided to pursue it with all her might. When Nathan notices that Drucilla can neither read nor write, he remembers her difficult past and the fact that he himself was struggling with the same problems and offers to give her lessons so that she can write a resume. Somehow, Nathan finds himself having something in common with Drucilla, namely the fact that he was once illiterate like her; and now, Nathan has the opportunity to teach what he in turn had been taught years before by Amy.
