1985 (#1) - Skip and Carol's engagement, the plans with Jack and Diane's divorce

While Lindsey could threaten at any moment to destroy the entire Abbott family, and in particular the reputation of Jill and Jack, if she showed and made public the photos of them together, Jack finds Carol a great friend and confidant. Abbott's model, in fact, always dispenses a lot of advice to the man who, as a good womanizer, makes his duty by wooing the beautiful girl. Jack, however, is disappointed when she reveals to him that she is not interested in a relationship, having recently become engaged to photographer Skip, the very guy that Jack wanted to hire instead of Joe. Jack, then, puts on a good face, wishing the couple all the happiness, and deciding to remain friends with the two of them. But Carol, of course, remains an exception and very few women can resist Jack's charm. An example of this is Diane, who, despite being happily married to Andy, feels that he lacks that passion and a touch of madness that only Jack has. Jack and Diane soon find themselves very close to each other, even though part of Diane feels guilty about betraying Andy. Diane then realizes she has to be honest with her husband and begins to think about divorce, as Andy begins to suspect that she and Jack might have something going on. The straw is dropped when the woman inadvertently overhears Jack talking about a gift for her. This one, convinced it's an engagement ring, admits all her feelings for Jack to Andy and immediately divorces him. Andy bitterly accepts the end of her marriage, leaving Diane free to pursue her one true love. In the meantime, Lindsey returns to show up at Jack's, reminding him of his pact of success and fame in exchange for the photos. Jill, while agreeing not to deprive herself of good and classy models like Christine and Carol, warns Jack that an affair with Diane could complicate things quite a bit. Jack, for once, listen to Jill. And so Diane, full of expectations and joy for the gift, is deeply disappointed when Jack gives her a simple friendship bracelet. The gift, Jack explained, is a simple way of saying that he is currently unable to commit to any woman. Disappointed and humiliated, and feeling completely foolish to have misinterpreted her entire relationship with Jack, Diane realizes that she has deluded herself unnecessarily, and has thrown away a marriage with someone who really loved her. Filled with a grudge against herself, even before Jack, Diane decides to leave Genoa City and leave for Europe to start a new life.
