1992 (#17) - Sheila's madness, Lauren's kidnapping, and the truth about Scotty
The result of Scotty's paternity test has once again brought Lauren into a depressive state. Despite Paul's conviction that something isn't right, Lauren seems to want to give up in this futile search for nothingness, speculating that Sheila is probably right to accuse her of seeing secrets and conspiracies everywhere in order to make up an excuse to get her away from Scott. Scott, meanwhile, visits Lauren on the very day that marks the anniversary of Dylan's death. Lauren, who has stayed home, is happy to have the comfort of Scott, who brings her little Scotty to cheer her up. Unexpectedly, Lauren and Scotty are immediately at ease, which surprises Scott since the child usually appears much more introverted and cries much more often. Just as Lauren, stroking the baby, notices that right where she remembered Dylan having a birthmark, then disappearing, Scotty has a scar, the phone rings. Having called Lauren in hopes of finding her husband, Sheila is enraged when it is Scott himself who answers the phone, raging and hanging up immediately. Scott thus runs with the little one to Sheila, leaving Lauren very upset about that Scotty scar. Sheila, meanwhile, purchases a gun and goes to Lauren's, finding her on the phone with Paul as she tells him about Scott and Scotty's visit. Surprised by Sheila's arrival, Lauren quickly closes the call and begins to argue with the woman. Shortly after, Lauren's phone rings again and this time it is Molly; Lauren is surprised at how Molly has regained her speech and is able, albeit with difficulty, to speak. Molly, not at all eager to exchange pleasantries, immediately asks the woman to come to her since she has something important to tell her. Sheila and Scott, meanwhile, find themselves arguing furiously as Scott does not like Sheila's reaction. As soon as she hears the word "divorce," Sheila literally freaks out and goes to Lauren's house to settle this matter once and for all. Lauren, who is preparing to go to Grand Rapids, finds Sheila in front of her again and the two begin to fight until Sheila, after stunning Lauren with a punch, pulls out her gun. A completely frightened Lauren is then kidnapped by Sheila and forced to drive to Michigan, where the woman, despite Molly's protests, asks Doris and Naomi to leave her alone with her mother. Here, finally, Sheila is able to take Lauren, who had been momentarily locked in the trunk of the car, into the house and hold her and her mother hostage. Bound and gagged, Lauren is shocked when Sheila forces her mother to finally reveal the truth about Scotty. Lauren then understands everything, and realizes that her son never died; Lauren then begins to see everything with the right perspective and realizes how crazy and sick Sheila is. However, now that she has finally learned the whole truth, Sheila informs both frightened Lauren and Molly that she has no intention of letting them go, as she absolutely cannot allow it.
