Arriving in town, meanwhile, is a young black girl, Drucilla Barber. With no money and only a note in her hands with an address, Drucilla wanders the street full of hopes and dreams, hitchhiking. Drucilla reveals that she is looking for her aunt, Mamie Johnson, who is none other than the housekeeper of the Abbott mansion. Drucilla is, in fact, Mamie's niece, being the daughter of her sister Lillie Belle; and after running away from home and wandering around in search of fortune and without a precise destination, Drucilla has now given up her dream of becoming a famous dancer and, more realistically, is looking for a bed to sleep in and someone willing to take her in. Arriving at the Abbott mansion, Drucilla is impressed by the wealth and luxury of the mansion, excited to be able to live there. When Mamie hears the doorbell ring, she cannot imagine that it is Drucilla. Concerned, she lets the girl in and offers her a hot tea, and is moved when Drucilla confesses to her that she has been living on the streets for a few years now; however, she is absolutely determined to categorically rule out that she can stay there, although she would be happy to take her in. Just as they are discussing the matter, John surprisingly enters, which embarrasses Mamie. In the end, Mamie is forced to reveal the identity of the girl, who promptly asks John for hospitality. John, after listening to the girl's story, agrees to temporarily give her a room in view of an alternative and permanent accommodation, but warns both Drucilla and especially Mamie not to have anything to do with this story. Mamie, filled with joy, thanks John several times and with gratitude, assuring him that she will not even notice his presence. Mamie, meanwhile, contacts Lillie Belle and Walter Barber, the woman's husband and Drucilla's father, to inform them that the girl is with her; the parents, who have not seen their daughter for years, are happy that their daughter is well; Drucilla, however, does not want to hear about their parents, confessing to Mamie that she wants to forget them forever.
