1983 (#18) - Joe's confession, Patty's acquittal and Jack and Carol's friendship
While everyone is praying for John's life, who is slowly beginning to respond to the stimuli following his heart attack, Ashley and Jack are furiously fighting over the responsibility of the man in the heart attack. Jack, frustrated, complains about his condition, forced to stay in a wheelchair, showing clear signs of depression. Meanwhile, Carl is getting closer and closer to the truth when he receives a call from a Jabot photographer, Joe Blair, who tells him he has to make a confession about Jack's injury. Joe thus confesses to a shocked and incredulous Carl that the real culprit is not Jill as he suspects, but his own daughter Patty. Carl, then, immediately understands what happened, not being able to believe that his daughter could have done all this, despite Jack's betrayals with Diane as a motive. The one who suffers most from this news is Mary, who realizes, however, that the shock she had from Patty has completely erased her memory. When Frank then grants a diagnosis on Patty's psychological condition, the coroner confirms that the woman was mentally incapacitated at the time of the event and is in fact absolved. All without Patty knowing anything about what happened, believing this to be the best thing. Jack, meanwhile, having heard the news of Patty's liability, walks away from his wife, even though she doesn't understand why. So Jack befriends Carol Robbins, a Jabot employee who, like Jack, is forced into a wheelchair. Carol tells her moving story to Jack, informing him that she was born with an irreversible problem with her legs that have kept her all her life in a wheelchair; but not for this reason, Carol feels inferior or depressed, on the contrary she shows Jack how it is possible to live a very normal life even without standing. Jack likes the woman, who appoints her as his personal secretary, and at the same time understands how he cannot be angry with his wife, who he decides to forgive as she is indispensable for his recovery.
