Back from the island, it's Katherine who goes to wait for her ex-husband at the airport. In fact, Katherine confesses to Phillip that she thought a lot during the days of his absence and that she decided to ask the man for a second chance; when Phillip shows no intention of having second thoughts, however, the discussion soon slips into a furious argument centered mainly on Katherine's accusation to Phillip that she took advantage of his state to get his signature. During the return trip, a desperate Katherine, not in perfect condition to drive, takes out all her anger on Phillip before skidding off with the car and ending her mad race in a ravine. A desperate Katherine, in fact, tries to kill herself together with Phillip, but it is only Phillip who gets the worst of it in the accident, he is rushed to the hospital in critical condition. At Phillip's bedside it is Jill who is the first to rush in; the girl despairs of the man's condition and does not hide her anger towards Katherine, accused of driving drunk, despite the woman's firm denial. Phillip, who lies now dying on the hospital bed, asks the chaplain to fulfill his last wish and to declare him and Jill husband and wife, so that the girl and the unborn child can benefit from his inheritance. Jill thus agrees to marry the man she loves, even if in the way she never would have imagined, before saying goodbye to him. Phillip thus dies before a desperate and inconsolable Jill. Thus begins the rivalry between Jill and Katherine, with the first one accusing Katherine of killing her one true love, and the last one accusing Jill of stealing her life. Detective Frank Whittaker's subsequent investigation into Phillip's death does not lead to Katherine's responsibility, despite Jill pleading Katherine's guilt.
