1991 (#22) - Family disagreements and the wedding of Nathan and Olivia

Things between Drucilla and Olivia, following Neil's introduction, finally seem to be going well. Olivia, in fact, no longer sees Drucilla as a rival who wants to take away her future husband, Nathan; and she can finally dedicate herself to the organization of her wedding. Olivia, in the meantime, calls her parents to inform them of her upcoming wedding with Nathan; furthermore, the eldest of the Barber daughters adds that Drucilla also lives in town and that, in spite of everything, she is doing just fine. Walter and Lillie Belle are overjoyed to learn of Olivia's impending nuptials, but are even happier to know that their daughter Drucilla is alive and well. The family picture, however, is abruptly interrupted by Drucilla who immediately makes it clear that she wants nothing to do with her parents. Olivia does not understand Drucilla's senseless reaction and asks her parents to stay, even though they are convinced that it is better to go home. When Olivia insults Drucilla and accuses her of trying to ruin her marriage by not having their parents present, the two begin to argue furiously, and only Neil and Nathan's intervention can calm them down. In the end, Olivia is forced to postpone her wedding, hoping that things will work out in her family. This decision was made mainly because of the serious health condition of Walter, who is seriously ill with diabetes. In the meantime, Drucilla is pleased to note that her plan to fake a relationship with Neil is working better than she had hoped, since Neil seems very interested in Olivia. And so, the annulment of the marriage gives Drucilla and Neil the chance to shuffle the cards, on one hand giving Drucilla courage to fight to conquer Nathan, on the other hand giving space to a rapprochement between a now in love Neil and an Olivia who surprisingly shows to appreciate the company of the man. In the end, as Walter's condition improves, Drucilla, Lillie Belle and Olivia finally find themselves happy together for Walter's recovery, showing for the first time that their family can truly be united. It's the right time, Olivia believes, to celebrate their newfound family togetherness with her marriage to Nathan. Putting aside his feelings for Olivia, Neil confirms to a disappointed Drucilla that he wants to continue to pretend to be her boyfriend during the wedding; a celebration that Drucilla, forced to be a bridesmaid, suffers. At the end, however, Nathan and Olivia declare their love for each other in front of God and all the guests.
