1986 (#18) - Matthew's hopes, the abortion decision and Ashley's hospitalization

Disappointed by Jack's behavior, who has once again proved incapable of embarking on a serious love affair, Nikki is caught by Victor preparing a candlelit dinner for him. Nikki, astonished and incredulous, receives Victor's apology for being absent and ungrateful towards her, promising her, if she wants, all his commitment and dedication to make her happy. Nikki can't believe Victor's incredible change, and agrees to put aside all the divorce proceedings to start their marriage from scratch. Victor, in private, explains the whole situation to Matthew, who agrees with Victor's choice to look after Nikki until the end of her days. Meanwhile, a devastated Ashley receives a visit from Matthew himself, who shows he is informed of recent developments in Victor's feelings. In her arms, Ashley weeping reveals to Matthew that she is pregnant with Victor but has not even had time to inform him of the news. Matthew consoles Ashley and promises that he will stand by her if she wants to. Despite Matthew's support, however, Ashley seems inconsolable and makes the difficult decision to have an abortion, being convinced that she cannot keep Victor's baby and raise it without him. The next day, when Matthew decides to propose to Ashley as the baby's adoptive father, he is shocked to hear from the woman about her willingness to have an abortion. Matthew then decides to inform Victor about the whole thing, even though it is too late. Victor then rushes to Ashley and is furious with the woman for not having informed her of anything and, above all, for having made such an important decision without him. Ashley apologizes to Victor, but the man, completely enraged, goes away, leaving a desperate Ashley crying on the bed. When Matthew returns later, he finds no one at home, despite the door being left open. A few hours later, everyone goes looking for the woman and announces her disappearance; Ashley, meanwhile, finds herself again wandering alone and without a direction in the streets of New York, where she is spotted by passers-by who immediately inform the police. Soon, the woman is admitted to the New York psychiatric center, under observation first by Dr. Emy Cole and then by Dr. Steven Lassiter.
