The inability to work and lead the company because of the injury causes Jack a great sense of failure. Although he never loved his job, Jack was used to being in charge of Jabot considering himself a successful man working for a goal that was that of supporting his family. Now, Jack found himself risking no longer being able to walk and no longer have any purpose in life and no longer wanting to fight for his company. When Ashley criticizes Jack for having neglected Jabot too much during his presidency, the man without thinking too much decides to respond to a mysterious offer to buy Jabot Cosmetics by the powerful Mergeron Corporation. The following week, when the representative of the Mergeron Corporation Eric Garrison shows up in front of Ashley informing her that he's in Genoa City to talk to John about the sale of Jabot, an astonished Ashley informs the man that his father has absolutely no interest in selling his company. At this point it is Eric who is surprised, since Jack had implied otherwise. Upon learning of the situation, and put on the spot by Eric, who tells the man that he has mobilized the powerful Mergeron Corporation for nothing, John gets angry with Jack for not telling him anything. Jack complains that he is the president, although not currently in office, and therefore has the right to make any decision, but just as father and son argue openly, resulting in heavy speeches such as being an absentee father or an unworthy son, John suddenly falls to the ground with a heart attack. As soon as Jack calls for help, a shocked Ashley can't believe her eyes and accuses Jack of wanting to kill their father and ruin his marriage, his business and now his life. Then she runs to the hospital at her father's bedside, fighting between life and death because of an arterial obstruction that required immediate surgery, comforted by Eric himself, who is deeply uncomfortable and sorry for what happened.
